I’ve been thinking about ahimsa, which translates to nonviolence. It’s the first of the 5 yamas, the ethical guidelines we follow as yogis. And specifically I’ve been thinking about the pressure we put on ourselves to do things that may not seem right. I’m not talking about peer-pressure, harmful to our body things, rather it’s the subtle violences … like doing what makes us feel uncomfortable or unsettled, that make us vulnerable .
So the question I had was “how do we differentiate between self-harm and pushing ourselves to do something that ultimately could benefit us?”
We can start by being a student of your own body. As you observe objectively you recognize the balance between the internal mind and how it affects us externally. And maybe you notice your daily actions that contain elements of violence…such as negative thoughts or self-talk, resentment, shame or guilt … or even acting out of fear. Be mindful , they can negatively affect our inner peace and create physical suffering within the body. Pain is inevitable, but suffering is optional.
Restorative Yoga is a great way to access ahimsa and release suffering by confronting our own inner darkness with compassion. Ultimately accepting events as they are with an open heart, to let go of reacting in any negative way, and then replacing those feelings with kindness and acceptance for ourselves.
Be proud of the chances you take for the good of your body and mind. Taking risks like trying a new yoga class can pave the way for a healing transformation.
So YES restorative yoga is difficult. I think it’s one of the most challenging genres of yoga. Why you ask? All I do is lie there comfy and she rubs my head …
because it’s passive,
it’s discharging …. IT TAKES GREAT STRENGTH TO BE STILL! & work in removing the built up layers that create obstacles for living your life in bliss!!!
LET THAT SHIT GO!
WHY??? should you practice Restorative Yoga…..
because restorative is medicine …
it’s your choice if you want to take it or not!!
